Sea Grapes.

The story sea grapes tells the tale of the odyssey and the fall of troy. It took Odysseus 10 years to return home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Which explains the part of the beginning sentence “that sail which leans on light” and “home-bound on the Aegean.” While stuck on the sea and on his journey back home the ship ended up going to different islands instead. At one point they encounter a cyclops which almost kills Odysseus and his men. This explains the part in the poem “the blind giants boulder heaved the trough...” Another part of the poem that stood out was “the flame” in “Since troy sighed its last flame” this represents the fall of troy.

After knowing more about this poem I do feel it has changed the way I think about it. I understand more about it now knowing that its of relevance to the story of The Odyssey. I understand more about how he was stuck on the sea and the part of hearing Nausicaa’s name and the fall of troy. Before this I was sort of stuck on the blind giant but now that I know more about the poem I understand how it was part of the encounters he had on his journey home. I feel the story flows a lot better now knowing its meanings.

In Anne Bradstreet’s poem “The Author of Her Book” the dominant images of the poem are the book, child, and visage. She considers her book of observation of her life experience as her child. Also she describes the look of the book, how represent the appearance, the process of revising or editing mistakes before showing to the public.When I finished it reading her biography, I was really surprise about Anne Bradstreet’s life. Anne show to be devoted, dedicated mother, wife, and woman. Her poems represent her life and how she expresses herself to her book. Anne uses metaphors that express deep feeling feminist style. Now I understand why Anne calls her book her child.

In Shakespeare’s poem Not marble, nor gilded monuments one particular image stands out. This image for me was eyes. Eyes in poems are known for many different meanings. Their considered by some to be mirrors of the soul, you can tell someone’s emotions from them or even if they are sober. They are also what we look to in people for confidence and trust. To get somebodys attention in traffic by looking at another driver or to see if a audience is listening. Shakespeare’s use of eyes toward the end of the poem defiantly was meant on a different level and I hope that with this insight it is closer to his meaning.

"Sea Grapes" vs The Odyssey

In the articles of Wikipedia I found a lot about homer’s poem “The Odyssey.” In the articles there is information about the characters of the poem and usually what they represent. I learned that Odysseus was a warrior that spends ten years in the Trojan War and then, another ten years lost in the sea. This explains the first part of the poem, where Derek says “That sail…tired of islands…could be Odysseus.” Also, I learned that during the period Odysseus was lost (where the poem begins) he finds a women name “Nausicaa” who she offers Odysseus to stay with, and leave her wife. This represents the adultery part of the poem, “…is like the adulterer hearing Nausicaa's name in every gull's outcry”.

Derek Walcott's SEA GRAPES

            The Fox and the Grapes

            I chose to research the term "sour grapes" from the poem. After reading the poem I felt it was a very significant line. From the information I found online I have figured out the poem relates to the old fable “The Fox and the Grapes”. Sea Grapes are literally the grapes out of reach for Odysseus. From the tale of the Odyssey, Odysseus was unable to get home for twenty years. He was trying to get back to Ithaca after the Trojan War but was constantly blown off course to different islands. Odysseus probably viewed the sea grapes of Ithaca as sour because he could not reach them. I also found out that the poem was originally titled “Sour Grapes”. The article went on to say that sea grapes have a naturally sour taste. This solidified my original thoughts about the poems meaning.
            This additional information certainly added to my understanding of the poem. I was glad to see the great depth and detail that Mrs. Greenwood went into about the poem. My first research attempts yielded nothing of this caliber. Each line of the poem was examined with great detail. The other sites that I listed are references to “The Fox and the Grapes”. They were useful in getting history to the saying “Sour Grapes”.

Shakespeare in this his 55th sonnet spoke of the inevitable death and how his love for the loved one will continue throughout eternity. How Mars could not even destroy the memory of this loved one's existence. That even after the beautiful tombs and statues that the wealthier people made tribute to loved ones that passed from this world, their love would remain and the memory will continue on throughout time.

In Not Marble Nor the gilded monuments, the author uses Mars, the roman god of war to show this person he is talking about cant be forgotten. He uses Mars in his poem because as the god of war, you would think that he could destroy anything but in this poem this person is so immortal that not even him or his sword and make them dissapear.
